WHAT YOU CAN CLEAN YOURSELF

It's simple really!!! The document feeder may look complex. but is really is a simple mechanism. your originals are fed by a bunch of rubber rollers. They are then carried on to the original glass, then the copy process starts. when it's done, your originals are then fed out by another bunch or rollers.

They may look different, the mechanics may be a bit different, but it is the basic idea. some of them feed face up, some of them face down, same thing!

Here is the 411 on cleaning the feeder!

  1. Dirty Feed Tires!!!  If the feed rollers are dirty, it will jam when feeding.  the copier will go trough the process of feeding the paper except the original will not go anywhere.
TIP >>  Ask your technician how you can clean those rollers from time to time.  A damp towel will do the trick.  Just clean the rollers and you are good to go.  Dirty feed tires slips on the "original", cleaning it up will give it more grab.

  2. Dirty Separator Pads/Roller!!! If the separator pads are dirty, the feeder will double feed.  The separator pads are what keeps the feeder from feeding more than one copy at a time.
TIP >>  Again, a damp towel will to the trick. Please to not soak the towel and blame it on me.
These two parts usually gets replaced over time because, as you guessed it, they wear out and cleaning them does not solve your jamming problem. If you feel that your copier is constantly jamming in the feed section, let them know when you call for service

  3. Dirty Pads!!!  Some sensors send a beam through the paper path and it gets bounced back when a paper is going through.  You may notice a black pad on the feed and exit sections of the feeder, if these are dirty, the sensor that gets activated by it will not be able to differentiate between the paper passing through and the dirt on the pad.
TIP >>  Use a piece of scotch tape and keep pasting and removing it on the pad until it is nice and black and no sign of dust is present

  4. Ask the technician!!!  The technician is your friend, he is here to help.  When he comes in to service your copier, ask him/her what you can do to save time and to keep your document feeder from jamming.

TIP>> The key here is time, ladies and gentlemen, time. We will come to fix your copier but that report may be late, Jim may have to wait for you fax. what if you could do these little things yourself? How much time would you save?

BEST WAY TO CLEAN YOUR FEEDER

Damp cloth!!!  you can use a rag to keep the feeder clean.  not just the rollers.  It is human nature; if something looks brand new, we treat is like so.  Well, most of us!

Air spray!!!  Like I said, dust can do a number in these electronic equipments.  So, it helps to dust it off once in a while.  spray it away from the copier first. do not hold it to close. do not spray it directly at any sensor.

Paint brush!!! Get yourself a nice paint brush with soft bristles.  Pull on the bristles and make sure they are firm.  The soft bristles are will not damage anything in the feeder. yet it will penetrate places where a rag has never been before.  First of all, it is not as expensive as a can of air spray.  It is the one thing in my tool bag that I use on every service call.

Who said a paint brush was only for painting?
