Copy Machine Say Remove Paper From Sorter, There Is No Paper

Copier Repair Tips > Copier Troubleshooting and Repair Tips > Sorting, Stapling, & Hole Punching

Q - my copier keeps telling me to remove paper from the sorter; there is no paper in there

A- if you look carefully at the bins in the sorter or finisher you may notice a hole or two in each one. They are right on top of each other. This is how the sorter/finisher knows that there is paper in the bin.

There is an LED above the tray that shoots a beam through the bins to a sensor underneath all the bins. If that bin is blocked by anything, there machine will think that there is paper in the sorter/finisher. I am referring to the sorter with 10 or more bins.

First, check underneath all bins to see if there is any paper clips staples of post its down there and if there are, remove them being careful that no staples fall into them little holes.

The easiest way to have a good view is by making 20 copies sorted to lift the bins.

While the bins are moving, inspect each one to make sure there is no post its or any small piece of paper blocking the holes on the bin. If it still displaying an the same problem, then call for service.
